Veterans Life Insurance Resources
Understand your existing VA benefits, identify coverage gaps, and make informed decisions about private life insurance options.
Navigating VA life insurance programs can be confusing. This page provides an educational overview of the programs available to veterans and their families — and where private insurance may fill important gaps.
VA Life Insurance Programs Overview
The following is an educational summary. For official information, visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at va.gov. We are not affiliated with the VA.
SGLI — Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance
Low-cost group life insurance for active duty service members. Coverage up to $500,000. Ends or converts upon separation from service.
VGLI — Veterans' Group Life Insurance
Allows veterans to convert SGLI to renewable term coverage after separation. Premiums increase with age and can become costly. No medical exam required if applied for within 240 days of separation.
S-DVI — Service-Disabled Veterans Life Insurance
Available to veterans with service-connected disabilities rated by the VA. Provides up to $10,000 in coverage. Application must be made within 2 years of the VA rating decision.
VALife — Veterans Affairs Life Insurance
A newer whole life insurance program for veterans with service-connected disabilities. Provides up to $40,000 in coverage with fixed premiums. Available to veterans under age 81.
VA Burial Allowance
A one-time payment to help cover burial and funeral costs for eligible veterans. Typically $300–$796 depending on circumstances — often far less than actual funeral costs.
Common Coverage Gaps for Veterans
VGLI Premiums Rise With Age
VGLI premiums increase every 5 years. By age 70–75, monthly premiums can exceed $400–$600 for $100,000 in coverage. A private whole life policy purchased earlier can lock in lower rates permanently.
VA Burial Allowance Is Limited
The VA burial allowance rarely covers the full cost of a funeral. Final expense insurance ensures your family has the funds they need without financial stress.
Coverage Ends at Separation
SGLI ends when you leave service. Veterans who don't convert to VGLI quickly or purchase private coverage may find themselves uninsured — especially if health conditions develop.
S-DVI Has Low Coverage Limits
S-DVI provides a maximum of $10,000 in coverage — not enough for most families' needs. Private policies can supplement this significantly.
